A Midsummer Night's Dream

Picture

Director’s Note – “When I first pitched this idea some years ago, my only thought was that it might be interesting to see the faeries as aliens. As it turns out, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of Shakespeare’s most difficult plays; while on the surface it appears as a simple fantasy, the complexity of its language and moral ambiguity of its characters offer a rich canvas on which to paint. The cast of this production have taken to this material with gusto, and I cannot be prouder of the work that they have put in over these last several weeks. I hope you enjoy it.”

Sean F
Oberon/Theseus
Sean does theater, he has always done theater; he will always do theater. Sometimes his theater is not in real time, but then it's less fun... Many thanks to Robbie and Hal for inviting me into this party, it's been a dream - or not, I'm not really sure... I need to read the script again. FMI see www.farrelly.nyc

Denise G
Titania/Hippolyta
Denise is a wife, mother, entrepreneur, and performer who shares her talents and gifts with the world. A woman with many hats, Denise is best known for her comedy. She’s performed all over the east coast opening for Jay-Jay Walker, Dan Cook, Bob Gautreau, and many others. Denise is also an actress, director, and playwright with over 50 years of experience on and off stage. Denise has performed in several shows such as: Doubt, Having Our Say, The Bus Stop, Joseph and The Technicolor Dreamcoat, Big River, The Waiting Room, and many more. Denise also was one of the directors of the drama club at Pittsfield High School, where she worked with what she referred to as her “uniquely gifted children.” Denise was able to use drama to help them express themselves despite their disabilities. Denise used drama to educate people to see beyond their limitations. Denise recently directed Nevaeh’s Brother at the Seacoast Rep. She also directed plays at the Player’s Ring and Mill Pond theater with Jukawaa Mazo Productions.

River G
Puck/Philostrate
River is very slowly reviving their acting career in Maine after working in regional theater across California and co-founding an original works ensemble based in Davis. They wrote and performed in several sketch comedy pieces, some of which were actually pretty funny! Favorite credits include: Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Davis Shakespeare Festival), Willoughby in Sense and Sensibility (Sacramento Theatre Company), Bingley in Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley (Capital Stage Company), and Doug in Gutenberg! The Musical! (Bike City Theatre Company).

Hal F
Producer; Moth/Egeus
Hal began studying theater in 2005 at the Maine Youth Summer Theater Institute in Machias Maine. Since then he has appeared in 18 different Shakespeare productions including Much Ado About Nothing, Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, Romeo and Juliet, Midsummer Nights Dream, Richard III, Twelfth Night, Othello, The Tempest, Macbeth. Hal was an original member of the Shakespeare in the Square Theater group in NYC and studied Theater with a concentration in Meisner Technique and Experimental Theater at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Hal’s most recent theater credit was in 2013 with Bayou City Theatrics in Houston Texas, where he “appeared” as the voice for an animatronic puppet of Kerchek in a production of Tarzan the Musical: Abridged (For Children). It has been a long 10 year absence from the stage and Hal is incredibly grateful and excited to pick up where he left off with this inspired little piece of theater. The cast and crew of this production of MSND have inspired, surprised, and delighted him at every turn and eagerly awaits the reaction of our audience to this wild and crazy play. Particular and emphatic thanks to co-creator and co-dreamer Rob Faucher. Making theater is much easier when you are doing it with one of your best friends.

Emily G
Helena
Emily is happy to be performing Helena for a third time. Her first was with Fenix Theatre Company and then Camden Shakespeare Festival. Recently she performed with Waterville Opera House in The Play That Goes Wrong (Annie) and with Camden Shakespeare Festival in As You Like It (Rosalind). She is currently a company member of Maddy’s Theatre. She has performed in Portland with Mad Horse Theatre, Maddy’s Theatre, Portland Players, and more.

Caroline D

Lizzy F
Lysander
Lizzy Fogg is delighted to be working with some of her favorite people on one of her favorite shows! She’s spent this summer both on stage in Lyric Theater’s Cinderella and off stage, teaching theater summer camps with Portland Stage. She’s also currently in Spamalot at the Portland Players. She’s in her third year at the University of Southern Maine, studying for a Bachelor of Arts in theater arts and a Bachelor of Music in musical theater.

Sean B
Demetrius
Sean is so excited to be on the stage at Deertrees for the second time this season. You may recognize him from his time spent in Dave's Sauna. Otherwheres you may recognize him as that benign spirit stalking through the lake Region woods, silently ambling through glen and thicket. Those wise to his aimless ramblings are known to leave offerings of dried meat and legal tender, typically lodged in a well marked stump or bent tree. He also takes debit and credit on request.

Hannah F
Quince
Hannah Faucher is a Maine native, currently living in Buxton and studying in Portland. She performed in a number of shows over her school days, including The Tempest and Hamlet, but she is thrilled to be making her professional debut in this production.

Kerry S
Bottom
Kerry (they/she) is a theatre artist & drama therapy graduate student based in Portland, ME and Cambridge, MA. They attended the National Theatre Institute in the Fall of 2020 and Atlantic Acting School in the Summer of 2022, and received their BA in English and Theatre from the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 2021. Some of her favorite roles include Harper (Angels In America - NTI 2020, Atlantic Acting School 2022), Lady Macbeth (Macbeth- Umass Lowell 2021), Norma (Perfect Arrangement- Umass Lowell 2019), and Gabriel Syme/Thursday (The Man Who Was Thursday - Martian Radio Theatre 2019). Kerry is thrilled to play Bottom in this production of Midsummer, and would like to thank their friends, partners, and family for their unwavering support.

Max S
Starvling
Makenzie is so excited to be making her Deertrees Theatre debut! A native to Maine, she did theatre whenever she could growing up. She then moved down to Portland in 2019, and received her Bachelors degree in Theatre (Tech/Design and Performance) from the University of Southern Maine in 2023. During her time at USM, she was an Assistant Stage Manager for The Love of The Nightingale, Tilly Evans in She Kills Monsters, Miss Scarlet in Clue, and she was the Stage Manager for The Thanksgiving Play. Recently, she was the Assistant Director/Stage Manager for And Then They Came For Me at Footlights Theatre, as well as the Stage Manager for Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella at Lyric Music Theatre. She would like to thank her incredible family and friends.

Rob F
Director
Rob is somewhat bewildered to have arrived at this point in their life, having at one time or another been a Classicist, Astrophysicist, Librarian, and Politician. They have directed, performed in, and studied Shakespearean theater for over ten years, including a semester abroad studying with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-Upon-Avon. They are amazed and humbled to have this show up at the Deertrees Theater, and very grateful to the cast and crew for making it happen. Special thanks to Hal for his unwavering belief in this mad venture, and his friendship over the long years.

Ava S
Stage Manager
Ava (She/they), originally from MA, is a recent graduate of The University of Southern Maine where she received her Bachelor's degree in Theatre (Tech/design with a focus on stage management) in 2023. Recently, she was the Assistant Stage Manager for OperaMaine's Studio Artist Program production of Rocking Horse Winner. She would like to thank her friends and family for all of their unconditional love and support!

Midsummer Night's Dream
Fri September 9, 2023, 6:30pm
Sat September 10, 2023, 6:30pm

A modern staging of this Shakespeare classic set during 1960s America, a nation in transition, in the real-world city of Athens, Georgia. Though today it serves as a safe haven for queer and genderqueer persons, in the 60s, Athens was full of tight-knit townsfolk in one of the most conservative towns in America. The faerie characters, for this setting, are transformed from fey spirits to queer and genderqueer aliens, whose interaction with conservative Athens fundamentally changes the city for the better.

From the minds of Shakespeare veterans Rob Faucher and Hal St. Louis comes a night of love, magic, and robots unlike anything you’ve seen before. Brace yourselves to experience something otherworldly- the extraterrestrial universe just got a whole lot bigger in this fabulous frolic
